LASUSTECH to host maiden Lateef Jakande media roundtable

The Department of Mass Communication at Lagos State University of Science and Technology, in collaboration with the DSE Foundation, will host the maiden edition of the Lateef Jakande Memorial Media Roundtable on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.

The landmark event is intended to honour the enduring legacy of Alhaji Lateef Jakande, a revered journalist, visionary media leader, and the first civilian governor of Lagos State, whose contributions to media and governance remain deeply influential.

Speaking on the preparations, Olatayo Agogo, a member of the event’s Media Sub-Committee, confirmed that all arrangements are actively underway to ensure the success of the historic gathering.

The roundtable is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM at LASUSTECH’s Ikorodu Campus, drawing media professionals, scholars, and students for a day of reflection and forward-thinking dialogue.

With the theme “Journalism in Digital Age: Lessons from Jakande’s Legacy,” the event will explore the transformative impact of Alhaji Jakande’s work in journalism and public service, while also charting a course for media innovation in the digital era.

An impressive roster of seasoned media experts will headline the discussions. They include, Mr. Gbenga Adefaye, former Editor-in-Chief of Vanguard Newspapers and current Provost of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, lauded for his leadership and contribution to the elevation of journalistic standards in Nigeria.

Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin, respected veteran journalist and media consultant, widely known for championing ethical reporting and media reforms.

Mr. Monzor Olowosago, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s media history, credited with decades of meaningful contribution to media development.

Mr. Taiwo Obe and Mrs. Adejoke Kosoko, both regarded for their influence in media education and practice.

Chief Tunde Fanimokun, a former Permanent Secretary in Lagos State during Jakande’s administration and a renowned public servant and philanthropist, will serve as the Chairman of the event.

The roundtable promises to be an enriching forum for insightful conversations, professional exchange, and engagement between media practitioners, scholars, students, and stakeholders.

Discussions will delve into Alhaji Jakande’s enduring impact, the digital transformation of journalism, and the challenges and opportunities of upholding integrity in today’s media landscape.

Speaking ahead of the event, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Prof. Oluwole Alabi, emphasized the roundtable’s relevance in both historical and contemporary contexts.

Also reaffirming the department’s mission, Head of Department, Dr. Steven Anu’ Adesemoye, highlighted the broader purpose behind the initiative.

This pioneering edition of the Lateef Jakande Memorial Media Roundtable reinforces LASUSTECH’s dedication to academic excellence, media leadership, and honoring the legacy of one of Nigeria’s most revered public figures.
