Barcelona moved four points clear at the summit of La Liga thanks to a stunning performance from Lamine Yamal, who netted a first career hat-trick in a commanding 4-1 victory against Villarreal on Saturday.
The young winger’s brilliance ensured the home side dominated one of Spain’s in-form teams, extending their lead over Real Madrid, who are next in action on Monday.
The game began with Barcelona surprisingly shaky, as Villarreal pressed high and tested the home defence early. A near handball appeal against Alejandro Balde went unheeded, but it jolted the Catalans into action.
soon found their rhythm, capitalizing on a mistake from Pape Gueye. Fermin Lopez intercepted the ball and slid it to Yamal, who calmly curled a low strike into the bottom corner in the 28th minute to open the scoring.
Yamal doubled his tally just nine minutes later with a sensational solo effort. Picking up the ball on the right, he dribbled past Sergi Cardona with a stepover, flicked the ball over Alberto Moleiro, and unleashed a powerful shot into the top-right corner, making it 2-0.
Villarreal responded after the break, pulling one back within minutes. Barcelona failed to clear a Nicolas Pepe corner, leaving Gueye free to convert at close range, with Raphinha playing him onside.
The visitors nearly equalized on 54 minutes when Ayoze Perez broke through, but his curling effort drifted wide of the target.
Hansi Flick’s introduction of Pedri added composure in midfield, helping Barcelona regain control. In the 69th minute, Pedri fed Yamal, who sliced inside and fired another clinical finish into the bottom-left corner, completing his hat-trick and putting the result beyond doubt.
In stoppage time, Jules Kounde broke behind Villarreal’s backline and squared to Robert Lewandowski, who tapped into an empty net to seal a 4-1 win.
With this emphatic display, Barcelona not only extended their lead at the top but also showcased Yamal’s emerging talent on one of Spain’s biggest stages.
