La Liga: Sorloth brace hands Atletico 2-0 win over Oviedo

Alexander Sorloth fired Atletico Madrid to a sixth consecutive LaLiga victory with a well-taken brace in their 2-0 win over struggling Real Oviedo at the Metropolitano.

The Norwegian forward struck twice in the first half to push Diego Simeone’s men to within a point of rivals Real Madrid.

After being denied twice early on, Sorloth broke the deadlock in the 16th minute, sliding in David Hancko’s low cross for his third league goal of the campaign.

Ten minutes later, he doubled the advantage, reacting quickest to a rebound after goalkeeper Aaron Escandell saved his initial effort.

Oviedo showed more intent after the interval, with Federico Viñas heading narrowly over and both Salomón Rondón and Santi Cazorla missing promising chances.

However, Atletico stayed firmly in control, with Giuliano Simeone and Conor Gallagher going close to extending the lead late on.

The win continued a historic start for Los Rojiblancos, who became the first LaLiga side ever to score first in each of their opening 14 matches of a season.

They have also scored in all 14 league games for the first time since the 1978–79 campaign.

For Simeone, it was another personal milestone. Facing his 33rd different opponent in LaLiga, he has now defeated 32 of them, Racing Santander the only exception.

The Argentine also sealed his 323rd league victory, pulling level with Miguel Muñoz in second place on the all-time managerial wins list, behind Luis Aragonés (344).

Atletico’s defensive discipline was again evident, restricting Oviedo to just one shot on target and 0.85 expected goals, while Sorloth alone registered eight of the hosts’ 14 attempts, with four on target.
