La Liga: Osasuna stun Atletico Madrid, boost European hopes

2 Min Read

Osasuna reignited their European qualification ambitions in La Liga with a spirited 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid, thanks to goals from Alejandro Catena and Ante Budimir.

The result also ended a dismal streak of six consecutive home defeats against Diego Simeone’s men.

Having suffered just a single loss at El Sadar in 2025 (W3, D3), Osasuna came out with purpose and took the game to Atletico early on.

Aimar Oroz and Budimir had early sighters for the hosts, while Sergio Herrera had to be sharp at the other end to deny the dangerous Alexander Sorloth.

The hosts’ positive approach paid off in the 25th minute. Bryan Zaragoza’s corner was met with a thunderous header from Catena, giving Vicente Moreno’s side a deserved lead.

Atletico responded by raising their intensity after the half-hour mark, with Sorloth again testing Herrera, who pulled off another key save to preserve Osasuna’s advantage.

Despite their efforts, the visitors, who came into the clash goalless in their last two away league matches, found it hard to break down a disciplined Osasuna defense. Giuliano Simeone squandered their best chance of the half just before the break, shooting wide from a promising position.

The second half mirrored the first, with Los Rojillos doing well to contain Atletico’s attack. Frustrated by their lack of bite in the final third, Simeone turned to Antoine Griezmann and Angel Correa in a bid to spark a comeback.

But it was Osasuna who struck again to seal the result. In the 82nd minute, Kike Barja whipped in a superb cross that Budimir flicked in at the near post—marking his 20th league goal of the season.

With the cushion of a two-goal lead, the hosts managed the closing minutes with composure, clinching their fourth win in six league outings and drawing level on points with Rayo Vallecano in eighth.

Atletico, meanwhile, endured their fourth defeat in nine LaLiga away fixtures in 2025.
