Villarreal playmaker Alberto Moleiro capped a standout performance with a stoppage-time winner as his side clinched a dramatic 3-2 victory over Real Sociedad on Sunday, lifting the Yellow Submarine to joint second in La Liga.
Moleiro struck twice in the second half of the pulsating encounter in San Sebastian, ensuring Villarreal stayed ahead of Atletico Madrid and level on points with Real Madrid, who were scheduled to face Girona later in the day.
The triumph also marked Villarreal’s fifth straight league win, strengthening their push in the title race.
Ayoze Perez opened the scoring midway through the first half and later set up Moleiro for Villarreal’s second shortly after the interval.
Real Sociedad responded with determination, as Carlos Soler pulled one back on the hour mark before Ander Barrenetxea curled in a brilliant late free-kick to make it 2-2.
But Moleiro delivered the decisive blow in the 95th minute, blasting home to keep Villarreal’s momentum rolling.
A day earlier, Barcelona had claimed a 3-2 win over Alaves to move top of the table ahead of Real Madrid’s meeting with Girona.
