La Liga: Mallorca shock Real Madrid 2-1, dent title hopes

Relegation-threatened Mallorca dealt a major blow to Real Madrid’s title hopes with a dramatic 2-1 victory at Son Moix, as Vedat Muriqi struck deep into stoppage time to seal a memorable win.

Real Madrid dominated much of the contest, but Mallorca goalkeeper Leo Román produced a series of impressive saves to frustrate the visitors.

Against the run of play, Manu Morlanes gave Mallorca the lead just before the break when he met a delivery from Pablo Maffeo and fired low beyond Andriy Lunin.

Kylian Mbappé was Real Madrid’s biggest attacking threat throughout the match, but Román repeatedly denied him, making crucial stops in both halves.

With time running out, Éder Militão looked to have rescued a point for Los Blancos when the defender, returning from a long injury absence, powered home a header from a corner delivered by Trent Alexander-Arnold in the 88th minute.

However, Mallorca had the final say. A swift counter-attack in stoppage time ended with Mateo Joseph picking out Muriqi, who fired home the winner to spark wild celebrations around Son Moix.

The result leaves Real Madrid four points behind league leaders Barcelona, while Mallorca boosted their survival hopes by climbing out of the relegation zone.
