La Liga: Barcelona beat Villarreal 2-0

Raphinha and teenage sensation Lamine Yamal were the standout performers as LaLiga pace-setters Barcelona moved four points clear at the summit with a routine 2-0 victory away to 10-man Villarreal.

The win, Barcelona’s eighth in a row in the league, allowed Hansi Flick’s side to end the year in a commanding position ahead of arch-rivals Real Madrid, reinforcing the sense that the title race is rapidly becoming a duel between the two giants, with Atlético Madrid already nine points adrift in third.

Raphinha tormented the Villarreal defence throughout the opening half and set Barcelona on course after 12 minutes, earning and converting a penalty for his fourth goal in three league matches.

The contest tilted decisively in Barça’s favour just before the interval when Renato Veiga was sent off for a foul on Yamal.

Yamal later put the result beyond doubt, scoring his third goal in five league appearances midway through the second half.

The defeat brought an end to Villarreal’s six-game winning streak, a run that had lifted them to third place before the weekend.

The hosts had threatened early on, with Nicolas Pépé heading wide from close range and Ayoze Pérez seeing one effort miss the target and another kept out by Joan García.

Those missed chances proved costly as Barcelona struck with their first meaningful attack.

Raphinha was clipped by Santi Comesaña after cutting inside and calmly dispatched the resulting spot kick, sending Luiz Júnior the wrong way.

The Brazilian winger came close to doubling his tally shortly afterwards, curling a long-range effort against the post.

Villarreal briefly thought they had drawn level when Jules Koundé diverted a low cross into his own net, only for the assistant referee’s flag to rule out the goal. Buoyed by that moment, the Yellow Submarine pressed on, with Pépé and Tajon Buchanan both striking the woodwork, while García was called into action to deny Buchanan again.

However, any momentum disappeared when Veiga was dismissed for his challenge on Yamal. The teenager capitalised soon after, firing through a crowded area from Frenkie de Jong’s pass to seal the points.

Despite late efforts from Georges Mikautadze and Sergi Cardona, both denied by García, Villarreal could not find a way back.

Barcelona substitute Marcus Rashford also went close late on, volleying just wide before seeing another effort cleared off the line, as the visitors comfortably closed out another convincing league victory.
