Authorities at the Prince Abubakar Audu University, Ayingba, have launched a formal investigation into the sudden death of a lecturer, Mr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, from the Department of Social Science Education, who passed away under unclear circumstances last Thursday while in the company of a female student.
The deceased was reportedly with Miss Glory Ojochegbe Samuel, a student in the same department, at the time of the incident.
His unexpected demise has since sparked public curiosity and speculation, prompting the university to urge caution and patience.
In an official statement issued on Friday, the institution’s Registrar, Yahaya Alilu, described the incident as “tragic and disturbing,” emphasizing that it is currently under thorough investigation by relevant authorities.
“We are deeply saddened by the unfortunate passing of Mr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle. His death in the company of Miss Glory Ojochegbe has understandably generated concern, but we urge the public and the media to refrain from speculation and allow the investigation to run its course,” the statement read.
The university also moved to debunk circulating rumors linking another student, Miss Bello Yahaya Lubabat from the Department of Educational Administration and Planning, to the incident.
“The university firmly dissociates Miss Bello and other students from the matter and cautions against the spread of unverified information that could damage the reputations of innocent individuals,” Alilu stated.
Reaffirming its commitment to justice and integrity, the school stressed that it would continue to cooperate fully with investigative agencies to uncover the truth behind the lecturer’s death.
“Prince Abubakar Audu University remains committed to upholding the values of truth, fairness, and justice. We appeal for restraint, responsible reportage, and respect for all individuals involved as the investigation continues,” the statement concluded.
Mr. Ibikunle’s passing has left both staff and students in shock, with many describing him as a dedicated academic and mentor.
The university has assured the public that findings from the investigation will be made known as soon as they are available.
