The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, has urged Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo to resign following his refusal to defect alongside Governor Abba Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Waiya emphasized that effective governance relies on trust and alignment within the executive council.
He said a deputy governor who is not politically aligned with the governor should not continue to participate in key government meetings.
“This is his personal decision, but there is no way someone who is no longer with you should be part of the routine council meeting,” Waiya said.
“Who knows with whom he might share important government secrets? In government, things are done based on trust, and you can’t trust someone who is not with you.”
Waiya added that stepping down would be “the most honourable option” for Gwarzo. “If I were him, I would humbly resign,” he stated.
The call comes amid significant political realignments in Kano State, following Governor Yusuf’s recent defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the APC. Yusuf, who won the 2023 governorship election on the NNPP platform, cited the need to strengthen cooperation with the Federal Government and attract development projects as reasons for the move.
Several members of the state political structure, including lawmakers, local government chairmen, and councillors, have followed Yusuf into the APC, weakening the NNPP’s presence in the state.
Waiya described the governor’s defection as beneficial for Kano State, noting that alignment with the ruling federal party could enhance access to federal interventions and development initiatives.
