John Stones is set to part ways with Manchester City at the end of his contract in June 2026, with no renewal expected.
According to reports from The Athletic and transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, the decision has effectively been made, with the defender now on course to become one of the most notable free agents on the market.
Persistent injury concerns are understood to have played a major role in City’s decision not to extend his stay.
The situation is described as “gone for sure,” with internal discussions already focusing on how best to handle the announcement and give the 31-year-old a fitting farewell after years of service.
Despite his decorated spell at the club, recurring fitness setbacks have limited Stones’ availability, pushing City to explore younger defensive options, including Marc Guehi.
Former club Everton are reportedly keeping close tabs on developments, with a potential return to Goodison Park emerging as a possible next step.
Stones originally joined City on August 9, 2016, in a £47.5 million deal, with an additional £2.5 million in add-ons, making him the second most expensive defender in the world at the time, behind David Luiz.
During his time at the Etihad, he has enjoyed remarkable success, lifting six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three Carabao Cups, as well as the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
