Authorities in Jerusalem have ordered the closure of schools and most workplaces following Israel’s launch of what officials described as a preemptive strike on Iran.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Jerusalem municipality said the shutdown would remain in effect until 6:00 p.m. GMT on Monday, citing security assessments by the military’s Home Front Command.
“In accordance with the assessment of the situation by the Home Front Command and the launch of a preemptive strike against Iran, it has been decided to transition from full activity to essential activity across the country,” the statement said.
Under the new directive, educational institutions will suspend activities, public gatherings are prohibited, and only workers classified as essential service providers are permitted to report to duty.
“There will be no educational activities, no gatherings, and no going to work, except for workers defined as essential,” the municipality stated.
“This policy takes effect from Saturday at 8:00 a.m. (0600 GMT) and will remain in place until Monday at 8:00 p.m. (1800 GMT).”
The move follows heightened tensions between Israel and Iran, long-time regional adversaries. Authorities said the restrictions were precautionary measures aimed at safeguarding residents amid the unfolding security situation.
Residents have been urged to comply fully with emergency guidelines as security agencies continue to monitor developments.
