Japanese tennis star Nishikori to retire after 2026 season

Japanese tennis star, Kei Nishikori, has confirmed he will retire from professional tennis at the end of the 2026 season, bringing an end to a career defined by resilience, consistency, and elite performance.

The former world No. 4 and runner-up at the US Open in 2014 has battled persistent injuries in recent years, which ultimately influenced his decision to step away from the sport.

Although Nishikori admitted he still had the desire to continue playing, he acknowledged that the physical toll of repeated setbacks forced a change of direction.

“To be honest, I still wish I could continue my playing career,” Nishikori said. “Even so, looking back on everything up to this point, I can proudly say that I gave it my all. I am truly happy to have walked this path.”

“Reaching the ATP Tour, playing at the highest level of competition and maintaining a presence in the top 10 is something I am extremely proud of,” he added.

He also highlighted the unique atmosphere of competing in front of large crowds, describing those moments as unforgettable regardless of the result.

“Whether in victory or defeat, the special atmosphere I felt in packed arenas is irreplaceable,” he said.

Nishikori did not shy away from the challenges he faced, particularly the mental and emotional strain caused by recurring injuries.

“There were also times when I was overwhelmed by frustration and anxiety due to repeated injuries that prevented me from playing as I wanted,” he admitted.

Despite those struggles, his passion for the sport remained a driving force throughout his career.

“Even so, my love for tennis and my belief that I could become a stronger player always brought me back to the court,” Nishikori noted.
