Inzaghi expresses disappointment, bitterness after Inter UCL loss to PSG

Inter Milan coach, Simone Inzaghi, expressed deep frustration after Saturday’s crushing 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final, saying there was “too much disappointment and bitterness” to address his future at this time.

PSG dominated the match completely, securing their first Champions League title with the largest winning margin ever recorded in the competition’s history.

Inzaghi, who has been rumoured to be considering leaving Inter, insisted that any conversations about his and the club’s future would have to wait.

“There will be time to talk about it calmly with the club,” the coach told reporters, emphasizing, “it’s not the right time… It’s awkward to talk about my future now.”

Just weeks ago, Inter appeared poised to replicate their 2010 treble success, but the season has ended empty-handed after the team faltered across all fronts.

Having been knocked out of the Italian Cup semifinals by rivals AC Milan and losing ground to Napoli in Serie A, Inter finishes the campaign without a trophy.

Inzaghi, who took the helm at Inter in 2021 and is contracted through 2026, has led the team to one Serie A title and two Italian Cups, yet the club has now suffered two Champions League final losses within three seasons.

Despite overcoming the Dutch, German, and Spanish champions to reach the final, Inter struggled to challenge the French giants in Munich.

The coach acknowledged the club’s strength and support but reflected, “as it was two years ago, we failed to win the most important match.”

With an average starting XI age just over 30, six years older than PSG’s, Inzaghi faces the prospect of rebuilding if he chooses to remain.

He noted his squad’s fatigue after “playing 58 or 59 games since last July” as a factor in their poor showing.

Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella echoed the sentiment but was clear that exhaustion “is not an excuse in a final.”

“The impression is that they wanted it more and this is the biggest disappointment. Heart is much more important than tactics and today it was missing,” Barella said.

Goalkeeper Yann Sommer described the team as “unbelievably disappointed,” adding, “It was a tough night, we didn’t perform well.”

“What we prepared all week, we didn’t manage to bring it onto the pitch,” he reflected.

“We need to swallow it. It hurts a lot. It was a big opportunity to win a huge title.”
