INEC records over 3.4m new voters in ongoing registration exercise

The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced that more than 3.4 million Nigerians have successfully registered in the second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise.

In its week 13 update released on Wednesday in Abuja, the commission said a total of 3,441,121 registrations had been completed as of April 3, combining both online pre-registration and physical verification at designated centres across the country.

According to INEC, 2,068,384 applicants completed their registration through the online pre-registration portal, while 1,372,737 others registered physically.

“The figure represents completed registrations after both online and in-person processes, though it remains subject to data clean-up,” the commission stated.

A breakdown of the data showed that Jigawa State recorded the highest number of new registrants with 201,047, followed by Lagos with 181,095, while Kano ranked third with 177,681.

Youth participation dominated the exercise, with individuals aged between 18 and 34 accounting for 2,354,768 registrations, representing 68.43 per cent of the total.

INEC also reported a higher turnout among women, who made up 1,922,143 (55.86 per cent) of registrants, compared to 1,518,978 men (44.14 per cent).

On occupational distribution, students formed the largest group, with 1,235,931 registrations, representing 35.92 per cent. This was followed by business owners at 701,912 (20.40 per cent) and those in farming and fishing at 615,967 (18.28 per cent).

The commission further disclosed that 48,330 Persons with Disabilities were captured in the registration data.

INEC explained that the figures were provisional and would undergo further verification through the Automated Biometric Identification System, as well as a period for claims and objections.

“These numbers are preliminary and will be refined during the data clean-up process to ensure the integrity of the voter register,” the commission noted.

The electoral body also clarified that voter registration remains suspended in the Federal Capital Territory due to legal provisions following the Area Council elections held in February.

INEC encouraged eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to take advantage of the ongoing exercise.

“Those who have not registered are advised to visit the official CVR portals to complete their registration before the deadline,” it added.

The Continuous Voter Registration exercise is a key component of Nigeria’s electoral process, aimed at expanding voter participation ahead of future elections.
