INEC acting chair meets political parties ahead Anambra gov election

The Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, on Tuesday held her first official meeting with chairmen and secretaries of registered political parties at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

The meeting, which forms part of a series of stakeholder engagements ahead of the forthcoming Anambra governorship election slated for November, focused on strengthening collaboration between the commission and political actors to ensure a smooth and credible electoral process.

According to a source within the commission, discussions centred on election logistics, party compliance, and operational preparedness. “The session provided an opportunity for INEC and political parties to address grey areas and fine-tune plans for the upcoming election,” the source said.

This is the first major engagement chaired by Agbamuche-Mbu since assuming office on October 7, following the temporary exit of her predecessor, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who proceeded on terminal leave in line with constitutional provisions.

Yakubu, while announcing his decision during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners last week, cited Section 306 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which outlines procedures for resignation from public office.

Agbamuche-Mbu is expected to serve in an acting capacity until the National Assembly confirms Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, recently approved by the National Council of State as the substantive INEC chairman.

Reaffirming the commission’s commitment to credible elections, Agbamuche-Mbu reportedly told party representatives that INEC remains “fully dedicated to conducting elections that reflect the true will of the people.”

She also urged the parties to cooperate with the commission and play by the rules, adding that “the credibility of any election depends not only on INEC’s transparency but also on the conduct of political actors and their supporters.”

The meeting is seen as part of INEC’s efforts to build confidence among stakeholders and enhance transparency in the electoral process as preparations intensify for the Anambra poll.
