I’m not a gospel singer – Sola Allyson

Eji Owuro reflects picture of my dream love life – Sola Allyson

Popular Nigerian singer Sola Allyson has clarified that she considers herself a singer, not a gospel artist, and shared candid insights about her unconventional marital arrangement.

Speaking in an interview with Oyinmomo TV on YouTube on Friday, Allyson said she had never identified as a gospel artist and did not mention Jesus in her songs because “He did not request publicity.”

Code-switching between English and Yoruba, she explained: “I don’t sing religious songs. As I am like this, I don’t call myself a gospel artist. My name is Sola Allyson. I am a singer.”

Allyson also addressed her marriage, revealing that it has been far from the fairy tale many people expect.

“My husband is in my house and I am in his house. That is how I understand love,” she said, emphasizing that societal expectations of marriage being easy are often misleading.

“We were lied to. Those before us did not tell us how hard it is. They made us believe that if we loved ourselves, we would live happily ever after. That has not been my experience,” the singer added.

She noted the importance of respect in sustaining a relationship, saying: “I did everything to make it work. I can give you everything, but if you don’t treat me well, it won’t work.”

On feminism, Allyson clarified its true meaning, stating: “Feminism does not mean a man is bad. It means giving a man and a woman the same right to choose and guiding them properly.”

The singer also disclosed that the emotional challenges she faced in her marriage once led her to seek professional help. “There was a time I had to see a therapist. Sometimes when trauma becomes too much, it’s like a computer crash,” she revealed.

Allyson, who married in 2003 and shares three children with her husband, stressed that their arrangement is neither forced nor hostile but reflects her personal understanding of love and partnership.
