Former Real Madrid goalkeeper, Iker Casillas, has publicly stated that he does not support a return of Coach José Mourinho to the Spanish giants, as speculation continues over a possible second spell for the Portuguese manager.
Mourinho, 63, is reportedly close to making a comeback to Real Madrid, although club President Florentino Pérez declined to confirm anything about the situation during a press conference on Tuesday evening.
Reports suggest Pérez is actively pushing for the return of Mourinho.
Casillas, who spent 16 years at Real Madrid and won five La Liga titles alongside three UEFA Champions League trophies, also previously played under Mourinho during his first spell at the club, made his stance clear on social media.
“I have no problem with Mourinho. He seems like a great professional to me. I don’t want him at Real Madrid. I think other coaches would be better equipped to coach at the club of my life. Personal opinion. Nothing more,” Casillas wrote on X.
Mourinho is currently in the final stages of his two-year contract with Benfica and previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning La Liga in 2012 and the Copa del Rey in 2011.
Meanwhile, President Pérez used the same press conference to announce that he had instructed the club’s board to begin the electoral process for the next board elections, in which the current leadership intends to participate.
He avoided naming potential coaching or player targets, insisting his focus was on restoring Real Madrid’s stability and returning control to club members.
Pérez also criticised sections of the media for spreading false claims about his health, including rumours that he has cancer, and directly confronted several journalists present.
At the start of the year, Pérez appointed Álvaro Arbeloa as interim head coach following the departure of Xabi Alonso, who left after less than eight months in charge.
Real Madrid have since struggled, losing to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals and falling behind rivals Barcelona in the La Liga title race amid growing issues within the squad.
