Hisbah arrests couple, three others for conducting ‘illegal marriage’ in Kano

The Kano State Hisbah Board has apprehended five individuals, including a bride and groom, for allegedly conducting an illegal marriage ceremony without parental consent.

Deputy Commander General of the Hisbah Board, Dr. Mujahideen Aminuddeen, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Monday in Kano.

According to Aminuddeen, the ceremony violated both Islamic and legal marital procedures, prompting the board to launch a full investigation.

“The marriage was contracted without the consent of the bride’s parents and involved a dowry of ₦10,000, which is below the minimum acceptable standard in Islamic law,” he explained.

Those arrested include the groom, bride, and three others who acted as representatives and witnesses during the ceremony.

Aminuddeen described the act as “a clear deviation from established religious and legal requirements,” emphasizing that the board would ensure justice in accordance with Islamic principles.

He further advised parents to remain vigilant and actively guide their children in matters relating to marriage and relationships.

“We urge parents to monitor their children’s social activities closely to prevent situations like this. Marriage is a sacred institution that must be conducted properly,” he added.

The development comes amid preparations by the Kano State Government to sponsor the mass wedding of 2,000 couples under a state-organized marriage program.

The Hisbah official revealed that all intending couples under the state initiative must register and undergo mandatory medical screening to confirm their health status before approval.

“The government’s mass wedding initiative aims to promote moral values and reduce the rate of immorality among youths,” Aminuddeen noted.

The suspects are currently being interrogated, and the Hisbah Board has pledged to uphold due process as investigations continue.
