Unidentified gunmen attacked three communities in Arondizogu, Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State on Thursday night, killing at least seven people in a brutal assault.

The affected communities—Umualoma, Ndiakunwanta, and Ndiejezie—were thrown into chaos as the assailants, reportedly riding motorbikes, opened fire indiscriminately between 10 pm and 11 pm.

The victims included shop owners, their customers, and passersby caught in the violence. The Imo State Police Command confirmed the incident, attributing the attack to suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network.

Police Public Relations Officer Henry Okoye stated, “The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, has strongly condemned the gruesome attack carried out by gunmen suspected to be members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN in the early hours of today, 25th July 2025, at Ndi-Ejezie, Umualaoma, and Ndiakuwata Uno, all in Arondizuogu, Ideato North LGA.”

He described the assault as “barbaric, inhumane, and totally unacceptable,” adding that tactical teams had been deployed to track down the perpetrators.

“The Command has deployed adequate operational and intelligence assets to identify, apprehend, and bring the perpetrators to justice,” Okoye assured.

CP Danjuma personally led a tactical unit to comb the affected areas, confirming that the situation was now under control. The police also implemented “proactive security measures” to prevent further attacks and restore peace in the region.

In a statement, the commissioner expressed sympathy for the victims’ families, saying, “While expressing heartfelt sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives, CP Aboki Danjuma prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased and a speedy recovery for the injured. He also extended his condolences to the bereaved and encouraged them to remain strong during this difficult time.”
