Police detain officers over brutality of Delta resident

The Delta State Police Command has detained some of its officers and summoned their team leader for questioning following an alleged assault on a civilian at Hospital Road in Asaba, the state capital.

The incident, which was captured in a viral video shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), sparked outrage among netizens after user @dammiedammie35 posted the footage with claims that police officers brutalized a young man during a search operation.

According to eyewitnesses, the victim was stopped for a routine search by the officers. However, tensions escalated when he reportedly asked one of the policemen to show his hands before searching his bag, fearing that evidence might be planted. The situation allegedly turned violent, with the officers physically assaulting him.

The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP. Bright Edafe, swiftly responded to the post, confirming that the Commissioner of Police had ordered an investigation into the incident.

In his statement on X, SP Edafe wrote:
“The CP has summoned the policemen involved in the barbaric act. He has ordered that their team leader be queried, while the other officers be detained pending the commencement of the orderly room trial. To this end, anyone who has any information on the assaulted victim should kindly reach me via DM or the PPRO’s office.”

Human rights activists and civil society organizations have called for transparency in the investigation, urging the police to ensure that such incidents do not recur.

The detained officers are expected to face an orderly room trial—an internal disciplinary proceeding within the Nigeria Police Force. Meanwhile, the police have appealed to the victim or eyewitnesses to come forward to assist in the investigation.

Reacting to the video, @flourish007 wrote, “The Nigerian police shouldn’t carry AK47s, which they use to harass citizens. Instead, they should be equipped with body cameras.”

@SemiNigerian wrote, “I dey look their body frames in comparison with the video, I no wan shout, make I still dey observe.”

But that’s a conversation for later. Keep oppressing people cause you have the power. You’ll have kids too and it’ll be their turn. Terrible humans.”
