Activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, on Monday led a protest march to highlight the dire welfare and pension conditions of Nigeria’s police personnel.
The demonstration, which began at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, saw protesters chanting, “Pay police a living wage and proper pensions,” as they waved placards demanding immediate reforms in the remuneration and post-service benefits of both active and retired officers.
Some of the placards bore bold inscriptions under the hashtag #PoliceProtest, with messages such as: “Decent Salaries Now,” “End Police Slavery,” “Pensions for Police Officers,” and “Dignity for Those in Uniform.”
Although the protesters were not permitted entry into the Force Headquarters premises, police authorities deployed escorts to accompany the group as they continued their march toward the National Assembly.
