GTCO pledges continued support for Lagos Polo Tournament

Managing Director of Guaranty Trust Holding Company, Segun Agbaje, has reaffirmed the bank’s dedication to the Lagos International Polo Tournament, of which it is the title sponsor.

The 2026 edition of the prestigious event has attracted top local and international polo teams, all vying for major honors, including the Majekodunmi Cup, Independence Cup, Open Cup, Silver Cup, and Low Cup.

Speaking ahead of the Majekodunmi Cup final between Lagos STL and Shoreline, Agbaje hailed the tournament as one of Africa’s largest polo events and emphasized that GTCO’s support is deliberate.

He said, “This tournament, one of the oldest in Africa, celebrates not only the noble sport of polo but the values we hold dear as a brand: teamwork, discipline, fair play, and a commitment to excellence. Beyond the field, it showcases Nigeria and Africa to a global audience, reinforcing the continent’s place on the world stage. Our longstanding sponsorship of the NPA Lagos International Polo Tournament reflects our conviction that sport can amplify opportunity, foster connections, and deliver world-class experiences for all.”

Agbaje was present to witness Lagos STL secure the tournament’s most-coveted prize, the Majekodunmi Cup.

Powered by Seyi Tinubu, the Eko polo kings edged out a determined A1/Shoreline side 10-7 in a thrilling final, with the decisive goal coming in the dying moments of the game.

This triumph marked STL’s biggest victory to date and their third major title in the ongoing tournament, which is now at its grand finale stage.

The team had previously claimed the Dapo Ojora Cup, Owen Cup, and Argentine Ambassador’s Cup in one remarkable sweep, alongside the Majek and Independence Cup titles.

Reflecting on the Majekodunmi Cup win, STL’s captain, Yasin Amusan, said, “It’s unbelievable. I couldn’t describe the first time we won, so I don’t know how to put this one into words. It could have gone either way after they (A1/Shoreline) drew level halfway through, but our winning edge tilted it in our favour.”

Other standout moments from the three-week-long tournament included the Lagos Art Hotel team pulling off the biggest upset of the competition, defeating hot favorites STL 13-12 in the final moments to lift the Chapel Hill Denham Open Cup.

The only visiting side to claim a major prize so far has been Kano Golden Alchemy, who defeated Ibadan Imperial/RiseVest 10-51/2 to win the Sani Dangote Memorial Cup, held in memory of the late Lagos Polo Club President.
