A tragic incident has claimed the life of a Ghana Premier League footballer, Dominic Frimpong, following an armed robbery attack on his team while returning from an away match on Sunday.
According to the Ghana Football Association, the attack occurred when gunmen targeted the team bus of Berekum Chelsea FC, forcing players to flee for safety.
In a statement, the club said “masked men wielding guns and assault rifles” opened fire on the vehicle, compelling the players to take cover in nearby bushes.
Police reports indicated that the incident happened at about 10:30 pm local time along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District of the Ashanti Region.
Frimpong sustained gunshot injuries during the напад and was later confirmed dead in hospital while receiving treatment.
“Another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was also robbed of 4,500.00 cedis ($408),” the police said in a statement.
Reacting to the development, the Ghana Football Association described the killing as “tragic” and a “huge loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghana football as a whole.”
“Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league,” the body added.
The 20-year-old attacker had joined Berekum Chelsea FC on loan from Aduana Stars FC earlier this year, making 13 appearances and scoring twice for the club, according to local reports.
