Ghana international, Iñaki Williams, has announced his retirement from international football, ending his four-year spell with the Black Stars.
The Athletic Bilbao forward made his Ghana debut in June 2022 after switching his international allegiance from Spain, fulfilling his ambition of representing the country of his parents.
Williams went on to feature for Ghana at three major tournaments — the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 32-year-old made 28 appearances for the Black Stars during his international career, scoring two goals.
Despite his pedigree at club level, he struggled at times to establish himself as a regular and influential figure in the Ghana setup.
His final appearance for Ghana came in July 2026, bringing to an end a chapter that began with significant expectations following his decision to represent his ancestral country.
Announcing his retirement, Williams said the time had come to end his journey with the national team while expressing pride in representing Ghana.
“Ghana has given me much more than football. It has allowed me to come back home, feel even closer to my roots and experience the enormous pride of representing my country and wearing this flag on my chest.”
Williams also thanked the supporters and those who contributed to his international career, saying he had no regrets over his time with the Black Stars.
“I leave happy, proud and with the peace of mind of knowing that I gave everything every time I wore this shirt.”
Although he will no longer represent Ghana on the pitch, Williams said his bond with the country would remain, pledging to continue supporting the Black Stars from afar.
He ended his message with: “Medaase. Always Ghana. 🇬🇭❤️”
