The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed the death of five of its personnel in September, following a series of accidents in which officers were struck down by reckless motorists while on duty.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, expressed grief over the tragedies and vowed that offenders would face strict legal consequences.
“These incidents are not just numbers on paper. They are painful losses of fathers, mothers, breadwinners, and citizens who died protecting lives on our highways,” Mohammed said.
According to the FRSC, the fatal knockdowns occurred in different formations across the country: September 6 at the Ekiti Sector Command, September 8 in the Ogun Sector Command, September 15 in Taraba, September 19 at the Jos By-Pass Unit Command, and September 24 in Obollo Afor, Enugu State.
The Corps Marshal described the repeated attacks on road safety operatives as unacceptable, stressing that his officers now face multiple risks beyond speeding vehicles.
“Beyond the danger of reckless driving, our men and women also contend with kidnapping, violent attacks, and even targeted assaults. This cannot continue,” he said.
He warned that the FRSC would no longer tolerate acts of recklessness that endanger its workforce. “Disregard for traffic laws and the safety of our officers will attract the full weight of the law,” Mohammed added.
The statement also disclosed that the corps was stepping up collaboration with security agencies to enhance the safety of its officers and installations.
“This move is not an act of aggression but a safeguard to deter attacks and ensure our personnel can carry out their duties without fear,” Mohammed explained.
While condoling the families of the fallen officers, the Corps Marshal paid tribute to their sacrifice.
“We salute their courage and dedication. Nigerians must honour their memory by respecting traffic regulations and giving due regard to FRSC officials on duty,” he said.
