Flamengo fires coach Filipe Luis despite 8-0 win over Madureira

Brazilian powerhouse, Flamengo, have stunned fans by dismissing head coach Filipe Luis just hours after an emphatic 8-0 victory in the Campeonato Carioca semi-finals.

Filipe Luis, who took charge in September 2024, guided the Rio-based club to their fourth Copa Libertadores crown last season, edging Palmeiras 1-0 in the final.

However, despite Tuesday’s dominant win over regional rivals Madureira, a result that sealed an overwhelming 11-0 aggregate triumph in the state competition, Brazil’s wealthiest club opted to part ways with the 40-year-old.

“As of Tuesday Filipe Luis will no longer be in charge of the team,” Flamengo announced, confirming that his backroom staff were also relieved of their duties.

The former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid defender enjoyed notable domestic success last year, leading Flamengo to both the Brazilian Serie A and Carioca titles.

On the global stage, Flamengo advanced to the last 16 of the Club World Cup, where they were eliminated 4-2 by Bayern Munich.

They had earlier topped their group, defeating eventual champions Chelsea along the way.

Despite those achievements, recent setbacks appear to have influenced the club’s decision.

Flamengo fell short in the Brazilian Super Cup final against Corinthians and were beaten in the Recopa Sudamericana by Argentina’s Lanus after extra time in the second leg at the Maracana.

Filipe Luis had stepped up from his role as a youth coach following his retirement from playing at Flamengo in 2023, marking a swift rise that ultimately ended in a dramatic and unexpected dismissal.
