At least 10 people have been killed and 64 others injured after an explosion involving pyrotechnic materials during a religious festival in Mexico’s central Mexico State.
The blast occurred on Saturday night near the Nuestra Señora de la Luz church in Temascalcingo, a municipality located about 160 kilometres northwest of Mexico City.
Hundreds of residents had gathered for a fireworks display organised as part of a festival celebrating the town’s patron saint when the explosion occurred.
The force of the blast reportedly caused a wall to collapse, leaving several people trapped or injured amid smoke and debris.
A local bishop confirmed that two priests were among those injured in the incident.
Footage shared on social media showed people moving through the affected area as they searched for survivors following the explosion.
Authorities have yet to establish what triggered the blast, while the Mexico State Attorney General’s Office has launched an investigation into the incident.
Pyrotechnic-related accidents are relatively common in Mexico, where fireworks are widely used during religious celebrations, festivals and street events.
The latest incident comes nearly four years after a fireworks explosion in a village in Hidalgo state left 17 people injured.
