Ex-S’Eagles Onazi returns to Italy, joins Series D side Acireale

Former Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has sealed a move to Italian Serie D side, Acireale.

Though the club has chosen to keep the terms of the deal under wraps, the signing marks a return to familiar ground for the experienced midfielder, who began his professional journey in Italy with Lazio.

Onazi spent four years at Lazio, where he played a key role in midfield and was part of the squad that lifted the Coppa Italia in the 2012/13 season.

During his time with the Roman club, he made 76 appearances and found the net four times across all competitions.

Following his stint in Serie A, Onazi enjoyed success in Turkey with Trabzonspor, winning the Turkish Cup in the 2019/20 season.

His journey also took him to Denizlispor, Lithuania’s Zalgiris Vilnius, and Italian lower-tier clubs Casertana and Avezzano.

On the international stage, the former Golden Eaglets star was instrumental in Nigeria’s triumphant 2013 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in South Africa.

He also represented the Super Eagles at two FIFA World Cups, Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018.
