Former 2023 presidential candidate, Faduri Oluwadare Joseph, has voiced concerns over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent decision to grant pardons to individuals convicted of serious offenses, including drug trafficking, terrorism, and murder.
Faduri, who heads the Rescue Movement for New Nigeria, also known as the Rescue the Vulnerable Initiative, acknowledged that while the presidential clemency might be framed as an act of mercy or reconciliation, it raises pressing questions about its effects on national security, justice, and public trust in government.
In a statement, the former Labour Party presidential aspirant emphasized that the exercise of presidential clemency must be anchored in fairness, transparency, and the broader national interest, given its significant impact on public morality and the rule of law.
He noted that although the Constitution grants the President the power to exercise the prerogative of mercy, such authority must not compromise justice or diminish citizens’ confidence in national institutions.
“Releasing individuals who have shown disregard for human life and the rule of law may send the wrong message about accountability and justice. It could also affect the morale of security personnel who continue to risk their lives daily in defence of the nation,” Faduri said.
The activist cautioned that indiscriminate pardons could embolden criminal elements, creating the perception that serious crimes may be excused without proper consideration for victims or national security.
He stressed that leadership demands a careful balance between compassion and accountability, noting that mercy must never come at the cost of justice or public safety.
“Mercy is a noble virtue, but it must be guided by justice and fairness. Compassion without accountability can weaken the moral fibre of society and erode the principles upon which democracy stands,” he added.
Faduri urged the Federal Government to implement clearer procedures for granting clemency, ensuring that future pardons align with national interest, judicial integrity, and the concerns of affected communities.
He also called for increased transparency in the pardon process to eliminate perceptions of political favoritism, emphasizing that every democracy depends on adherence to the law and accountability.
Reaffirming his group’s dedication to peace, justice, and responsible governance, Faduri encouraged Nigerian leaders to prioritize fairness and transparency in their decision-making.
