Ex-Man Utd star Scholes banned from driving after speeding convictions

Former Manchester United midfielder, Paul Scholes, has been handed a six-month driving ban after being convicted in two separate motoring cases within two days.

The 51-year-old was caught speeding while driving his Range Rover on the A649 Halifax Road near Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, shortly after 23:30 BST on 3 March.

Scholes admitted through a notice of intended prosecution that he was behind the wheel at the time of the offence.

However, court documents said he was not eligible for a speed awareness course because he was already carrying penalty points on his licence and faced an automatic driving ban.

The former England international was sentenced at Bradford Magistrates’ Court on 12 August, receiving a six-month disqualification alongside fines.

A second case involved Scholes’s Mercedes, which was recorded exceeding the speed limit on the A670 Mossley Road near Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, at about 11:10 BST on 14 November last year.

Although prosecutors dropped the speeding allegation in that case, they continued with a charge relating to Scholes’s failure to respond to two letters sent to his home.

Manchester Magistrates’ Court subsequently imposed six penalty points and additional fines on 13 August.

The combined fines, court costs and other fees from both cases amounted to £1,472.

A court official said Scholes was prosecuted through private hearings under the Single Justice Procedure.

He did not enter pleas to either charge and was convicted in his absence.

Scholes enjoyed an illustrious career at Manchester United, making 499 appearances for the club and earning 66 England caps.
