Ex-Man City star Silva comes out of retirement to join Hong Kong club

Former Manchester City and Spain midfielder, David Silva, has come out of retirement after three years to join Hong Kong Premier League side, Supreme Sha Tin.

The 40-year-old, who was part of Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning squad, retired in the summer of 2023 after suffering a serious knee injury during pre-season training with Real Sociedad in Spain.

Silva, who made 125 appearances for Spain, expressed his excitement about returning to football after the Hong Kong club announced his signing on Wednesday.

“I am delighted to join Supreme Sha Tin,” Silva said in a video posted on the club’s social media channels.

“I’m really looking forward to going to Hong Kong to enjoy the culture, the people, and the food in Sha Tin — and the football in Hong Kong, of course.”

Supreme Sha Tin were promoted to the Hong Kong Premier League last season and currently sit eighth in the 11-team competition.

The club said Silva would arrive in Hong Kong soon to settle in, join squad training and work towards attaining full match fitness before making his debut.

“David Silva will be in Hong Kong soon to settle in, link up with squad training, and build up to peak match fitness before making his pitch debut,” the club said.
