Ex-Liverpool defender Martin Kelly retires from football

Former Liverpool defender, Martin Kelly, has officially confirmed his retirement from professional football.

Kelly, who came through Liverpool’s academy before making over 120 appearances for Crystal Palace, was signed by then West Bromwich Albion manager Steve Bruce as a free agent in 2022.

Although the 34-year-old decided to step away from the game earlier in the year, he only recently made the news public in an interview with The Athletic.

“I’ve never actually got around to writing the social media post to announce it; I’ve only told friends and family, but yeah, I’ve retired,” Kelly revealed.

“It was March when I sat down with the family and told them I was thinking about it. Around the same time, I got asked to play for Liverpool in a legends game against Chelsea.

“One of the stipulations was that you had to be retired, so that just reaffirmed my decision.”
