Former England captain, John Terry, has voiced strong disappointment over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the Super Eagles’ absence as a significant blow to the tournament’s appeal.
Terry argued that a competition of such magnitude is diminished when a footballing nation as culturally vibrant and historically influential as Nigeria national football team is not present on the global stage.
He stressed that Nigeria consistently contributes flair, passionate supporters, and a rich football identity to international tournaments.
Terry laments Eagles’ World Cup absence
Speaking during a virtual roundtable session organised by SuperSport, the former Chelsea defender highlighted Nigeria’s quality and the entertainment value they typically bring to world football.
“Nigeria will be a big miss. This is a World Cup for participants who haven’t had the opportunity to play in the tournament.
“I would have loved to see a top team like Nigeria there because they’ve got some great individuals. They’re a great nation. So, yeah, they fall under that category for me.
“I think they are a big miss because Nigeria probably would have gone further in the competition, but unfortunately, one side’s loss is another’s gain.
“I know Mikel Obi is very upset that they’re not there. It means he can’t do more commentating on the World Cup. That’s why he was upset.”
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, an international event organised by FIFA, will officially kick off with co-hosts Mexico facing South Africa in Group A on Thursday.
Portugal edge Super Eagles in friendly
Meanwhile, the Portugal national football team defeated Nigeria 2-1 in an international friendly as both sides continued their build-up to the tournament.
Pedro Neto opened the scoring for Portugal before Akor Adams brought the Nigeria national football team level.
However, the Europeans restored their lead through substitute Francisco Conceição, who produced a superb curling finish into the far corner to seal victory.
The result means Portugal head into the World Cup on the back of consecutive wins, while Nigeria are left to reflect on a narrow defeat despite Adams’ equaliser.
