Former Director-General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Agency for Financial Investigation, Baltasar Engonga Ebang, is currently standing trial over allegations of financial misconduct.

The trial, which commenced on Monday, June 30, involves Ebang and several officials linked to a state-owned enterprise under the Ministry of Finance.

Ebang first drew widespread public attention in late 2024 when explicit videos of him surfaced and went viral.

Prosecutors are now seeking an 18-year prison sentence against him, along with substantial financial penalties. They are accusing Ebang of embezzlement, illicit enrichment, and abuse of power during his tenure at ANIF.

According to the prosecution, Baltasar Engonga Ebang misappropriated more than one billion CFA francs, an amount equivalent to roughly 1.67 million US dollars.

The prosecution is pressing for distinct sentences on each count: eight years’ imprisonment for embezzlement, four years and five months for illicit enrichment, and six years and one day for abuse of power. They are also demanding a fine of 910 million CFA francs and are calling for Ebang to be barred from holding any public office throughout the duration of his sentence.

However, the defence team has categorically rejected all the accusations levelled against Ebang and the other officials named in the case, arguing that the charges are entirely unfounded.
