Aston Villa were held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham at Villa Park on Saturday after goalkeeper Zion Suzuki’s costly error denied the hosts all three points in their Premier League encounter.
Senegalese striker Nicolas Jackson gave Villa the lead in the 39th minute, but Suzuki’s second-half blunder allowed Fulham to earn a deserved share of the spoils.
Villa had an opportunity to take an early lead when referee Sam Barrott awarded them a penalty following a VAR review for handball against Sander Berge.
However, John McGinn failed to convert from the spot, sending his effort against the crossbar.
Fulham also threatened before the break, with Oscar Bobb forcing an impressive save from Suzuki after a quick counterattack.
The hosts eventually broke the deadlock through Jackson, who finished calmly after Johan Manzambi set him up inside the penalty area.
The visitors returned with greater urgency after the interval and pushed for an equaliser.
Alex Iwobi, Gonzalo García and Bobb all threatened as Fulham increased the pressure on the Villa defence.
Iwobi missed a good opportunity to draw Fulham level when his header went straight at Suzuki.
However, the Nigerian midfielder played a decisive role in the 64th minute when his inswinging corner caught the Villa goalkeeper off guard, with Suzuki fumbling the ball over his own goal line for an unfortunate own goal.
Villa struggled to regain control after conceding but pushed forward in the closing stages in search of a winner. Pau Torres headed a free-kick narrowly wide, while Alejandro Garnacho saw his effort blocked as both sides eventually settled for a point.
