Bruno Fernandes rescued Manchester United with a stoppage-time penalty, securing a dramatic 3-2 victory over promoted Burnley and sparing Ruben Amorim’s struggling side further embarrassment.
United’s manager remained under pressure following Wednesday’s Carabao Cup humiliation at the hands of League Two’s Grimsby, leaving fans anxious about the club’s early-season form.
Saturday’s hard-fought triumph at least allows United to head into the international break with a first win under their belt.
The hosts dominated early, though VAR denied them a penalty after Mason Mount went down under pressure from Kyle Walker.
United eventually opened the scoring in the 27th minute when Casemiro’s header, from a Fernandes free-kick, rebounded off the crossbar and in off Burnley captain Josh Cullen, leaving goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka helpless.
But United’s lead was quickly challenged. Matheus Cunha went down injured soon after, and Burnley responded through Lyle Foster, who levelled the score early in the second half.
United regained the lead through Bryan Mbeumo in the 57th minute, capitalizing on a flicked-on pass from Joshua Zirkzee and a precise cut-back from Diogo Dalot.
However, Burnley refused to go quietly. Jaidon Anthony, taking advantage of a shaky Altay Bayindir in goal, equalized in the 66th minute, keeping the hosts on edge.
As the clock ticked into stoppage time, United looked poised to settle for a draw, until Anthony’s desperate shirt pull on Amad Diallo gave the home side a penalty.
Fernandes, who had missed a penalty against Fulham earlier this season, remained calm and slotted home the decisive goal.
Old Trafford erupted as relief washed over supporters, who had sung Amorim’s praise despite the team’s rocky start.
Though the manager still faces scrutiny, United leave the pitch with a morale-boosting win to build on.
