El-Rufai granted bail after mother’s death

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has been granted temporary bail by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission following the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai.

The development allows the former governor to attend and perform the funeral rites of his late mother, who reportedly died in Cairo, Egypt, after a period of illness. She was said to be about 100 years old.

Confirmation of El-Rufai’s release came from his son, Bashir El-Rufai, who disclosed the development in a post on social media.

“Alhamdulillah. My father has been released to enable him honour his mother’s burial. We appreciate the support and prayers from everyone during this period,” he said.

The late matriarch’s death was earlier announced by her grandson, Bello El-Rufai, who described her passing as a return to her Creator and called for prayers for her soul.

Her death comes barely a week after the demise of her daughter-in-law, compounding grief within the El-Rufai family.

Meanwhile, prominent Nigerians, including President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, have expressed condolences over the loss.

In a statement, Tinubu described the deceased as a woman of remarkable legacy who raised children and grandchildren that have contributed meaningfully to society.

“Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the passing of your beloved mother,” the President said. “Losing a mother is a pain unlike any other. I pray that the memories of her life bring comfort to you and your family.”

Similarly, Atiku said he was saddened by the news but noted that the late matriarch lived a fulfilled life.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and pray that Almighty Allah grants her Aljannah Firdaus,” he said.

Governor Sani also paid tribute, describing Hajiya Umma El-Rufai as a woman of compassion, humility, and strong moral values.

“She was a devoted mother and a source of guidance within her community. Her life was defined by service, kindness, and unity,” he stated.

Also reacting, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, said he had fond memories of the deceased, noting her motherly care and support over the years.

“My heartfelt condolences to the family. May Almighty Allah forgive her shortcomings and grant her eternal rest,” Ribadu said.

El-Rufai is currently facing trial over allegations of corruption and money laundering.

He was arraigned before a Federal High Court in Kaduna earlier in the week on multiple charges, with proceedings adjourned for the hearing of pending applications, including his bail request.

As of the time of filing this report, details of the burial arrangements had yet to be made public.
