The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says it has apprehended 66 individuals allegedly involved in internet-related fraud across Ogun and Lagos states.
The commission’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Abuja, noting that the arrests followed credible intelligence on the suspects’ activities.
According to him, 55 of the suspects were picked up on Wednesday during a sting operation at K Hotel in Itori, Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State, while 11 others were arrested on Thursday at Tulip Haven, Chevron area of Lekki, Lagos.
“The commission acted on actionable intelligence, which led to the arrest of the suspects who were engaged in various forms of internet-related fraud,” Oyewale said.
He revealed that items recovered from the Ogun operation included six luxury vehicles, two locally-made pistols, a motorcycle, several mobile phones and laptops, incriminating documents, and 89 unclaimed mobile phones.
From the Lagos raid, the EFCC recovered one Range Rover, three Mercedes-Benz cars, two Lexus SUVs, one Toyota vehicle, 15 iPhones, two Android phones, one Nokia torchlight phone, and a MacBook laptop.
Oyewale further stated, “All the suspects have provided useful statements to our investigators and will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.”
The anti-graft agency has in recent months intensified its crackdown on cybercrime, warning that those involved will face the full weight of the law.
