Court adjourns case against Anthony Joshua’s driver to January 20

A Magistrate Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned the case against Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver involved in the fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two close associates of boxing star Anthony Joshua, to January 20, 2026.

Kayode, 46, was arraigned on Friday by the Ogun State Police Command over the crash, which occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Confirming the development, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the adjournment was to allow for further legal proceedings.

“The defendant was charged before the Sagamu Magistrate Court today, and the matter was adjourned until January 20, 2026, for further proceedings,” Babaseyi said in a statement issued in Abeokuta.

The arraignment followed Kayode’s arrest two days earlier after police concluded preliminary investigations into the accident, which happened near Danco on the Lagos-Ibadan corridor.

The crash led to the death of Kevin Latif Ayodele, 36, a British-Nigerian citizen, and Sina Ghami, 36, a British national. Both men were members of Joshua’s training and support team.

Police sources said the Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle involved in the crash allegedly suffered a tyre burst while overtaking, causing the driver to lose control.

“The vehicle was reportedly travelling above the recommended speed limit when the tyre burst during an overtaking manoeuvre,” a police source said.

The SUV, with registration number KRD 850 HN, reportedly collided with an illegally parked truck loaded with soya beans on the road’s hard shoulder. The impact was said to have torn off part of the vehicle.

Ayodele and Ghami died instantly, while Joshua and Kayode sustained minor injuries. Joshua, who was seated behind the driver, narrowly escaped death.

Local emergency responders reportedly described his survival as “miraculous.”

Kayode, a long-time member of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, was treated for minor injuries at a hospital in Lagos and discharged on New Year’s Eve before being transferred to Abeokuta for questioning.

“The driver was discharged after treatment and brought in for questioning. He was stable and able to give his account of the incident,” a police source disclosed.

Although details of the specific charges were not immediately made public, police had earlier indicated that Kayode could face charges related to reckless driving, pending the outcome of investigations.

Meanwhile, both the Lagos and Ogun State governments confirmed that Joshua was discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, after doctors certified him fit to continue recovery at home.

In a joint statement, Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and Gbenga Omotosho, Lagos State Commissioner for Information, said Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos to pay their last respects to the deceased.

“The governments appreciate the concern, prayers and support shown by Nigerians and the international community following the unfortunate incident,” the statement read.

The statement also conveyed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his support and commended medical personnel at Lagoon Hospital for their professionalism.

The remains of the two victims were later flown out of Lagos aboard a Turkish Airlines cargo flight, transiting through Istanbul to London for burial arrangements.

The accident occurred just hours after Joshua and his companions arrived in Nigeria from London on a Virgin Atlantic flight.

Police said investigations were ongoing, including efforts to locate the driver of the truck involved in the collision, who is reportedly on the run.

The court is expected to hear further details of the case when proceedings resume on January 20, 2026.
