Conductor killed as petrol-laden tanker crashes in Anambra

A fatal road accident involving a petrol-laden tanker claimed the life of a conductor on Sunday in the Umuike Echem area of Nnobi, near Nnokwa junction in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

According to The PUNCH, the incident occurred when the driver of the Premium Motor Spirit-laden truck reportedly lost control while trying to navigate a sharp bend and rammed into a perimeter fence.

Eyewitnesses said the impact caused the tanker to topple, with petrol leaking from the vehicle and raising fears of a possible explosion.

One of the eyewitnesses at the scene, who preferred to remain anonymous, recounted: “The driver was negotiating a sharp bend when he lost control and crashed into the fence. The tanker fell, and fuel began to spill. The risk of fire was very high, but thankfully, the fire service responded quickly.”

Tragically, the conductor in the truck died on the spot after being flung out of the vehicle, while the driver sustained injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Responding to the emergency, the Anambra State Fire Service deployed personnel from two fire stations alongside firefighting trucks and equipment. Their swift intervention reportedly prevented what could have been a catastrophic fire outbreak.

The State Fire Chief, Engr. Chukwudi Chiketa, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday.

“Our men arrived promptly at the scene following a distress call at about 9:45 a.m. on Sunday. They immediately commenced cooling operations to avert an explosion,” Chiketa said. “We successfully transferred the remaining fuel into another truck and fully secured the area to avoid any secondary hazards.”

The scene remained cordoned off on Monday as emergency officials continued precautionary measures to ensure the safety of road users and residents in the area.
