Comoros edged closer to a historic first-ever World Cup qualification after defeating the Central African Republic 2-0 in Meknes, Morocco, on Sunday.
The island nation of fewer than 900,000 people, situated off Africa’s southeast coast, climbed two spots to second place in Group I, trailing leaders Ghana by just a single point.
In Africa’s qualification format, only the nine group winners book direct tickets to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
However, the four best second-placed teams will have a playoff lifeline. With 15 points, Comoros now sit as the fourth-best runner-up, behind Cameroon and Senegal only on goal difference.
France-born stars Youssouf M’Changama, the team’s captain, and Myziane Maolida struck in the 20th and 39th minutes respectively, sealing Comoros’ fifth win in eight qualifying matches.
The fixture had to be staged in Morocco since the Central African Republic lacks a FIFA-approved stadium.
