W’Cup qualifiers: S’Africa in trouble over ineligible player, says Oliseh

Former Super Eagles skipper and seasoned football pundit, Sunday Oliseh, has revealed that South Africa could be hit with disciplinary sanctions from FIFA.

This comes after allegations that Bafana Bafana fielded an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, in their 2-0 triumph over Lesotho during the March 2025 World Cup qualifier in Polokwane.

Mokoena reportedly played in the fixture despite already accumulating two yellow cards in earlier qualifiers.

Lesotho have since lodged a formal protest, though FIFA is yet to issue an official ruling on the matter.

Addressing the situation on his official podcast, Oliseh, who also serves on FIFA’s Technical Group, explained the governing body’s regulations, the disciplinary procedures involved, and what Nigeria should prioritize ahead of Tuesday’s decisive Group C encounter against South Africa in Bloemfontein.

“To the best of my knowledge South Africa is in trouble.

“If a team fields an ineligible player and a valid protest is upheld, standard penalties include the forfeiture of the match.

“The result is typically overturned to a 3-0 defeat for the offending team, regardless of the actual score, resulting in the loss of three points for South Africa in this case and an award of three points to Lesotho,” Oliseh stated.
