Samuel Chukwueze appears determined to make the most of his fresh opportunity at AC Milan after making a strong impression in pre-season under new manager Ruben Amorim.
The Nigerian winger was among Milan’s standout performers in their 4-2 friendly victory over Manchester United in Wroclaw on Saturday, contributing a goal and two assists.
Chukwueze’s display was particularly encouraging because of the tactical adjustment Amorim has introduced, with the 27-year-old being deployed in a wing-back role rather than his traditional position further forward.
Having spent most of his career as an attacking winger, Chukwueze admitted that the new position requires adjustment but believes his willingness to embrace the coach’s instructions could prove important.
“Yes, he’s a good coach. He trusts me, so he gave me an opportunity. Now it’s up to me to seize it. He simply gave me faith, and I think I have to take advantage of it. I can’t waste this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, returning to Milan after my loan,” Chukwueze told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
He also acknowledged that adapting to the unfamiliar role will require discipline and confidence in Amorim’s tactical ideas.
“Although it’s a position I have to adapt to because I’ve never played in this position in my career. As a footballer, if a coach wants you to play in this position, you have to do it by believing in yourself and in the coach, because he knows what he wants.
“So I just have to keep working hard, believing in myself and that I can do it. For me, it’s an opportunity I have to seize. I know it’s a difficult task, but I believe in myself. I know I can do it, that I can do anything.”
The former Villarreal player is also aware that he must continue improving before the new campaign gets underway.
Asked about Milan’s performances and his development in the new system, Chukwueze said,
“Yes, a lot. For me, I think it’s something I need to work on. It’s my first time playing in this position, so I’m continuing to work hard. I need to improve every practice. I think the coaching staff is helping me.
“The coach is helping me too. Every time I make a mistake, he tells me, ‘Oh, Chukwueze, this is what you have to do.’ So I think I’ll improve before the season starts.”
Chukwueze returned to Milan this summer following a loan spell at Fulham, where he recorded three goals and four assists in 23 Premier League appearances.
Fulham had the option to make the move permanent for €26m but decided against activating the clause.
During his time in England, Chukwueze also linked up with fellow Nigerians Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey.
His impressive showing against Manchester United could now strengthen his case for a more prominent role at Milan as Amorim continues to shape his squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.
