The Borno State Police Command has intensified security across Maiduguri and other strategic locations by deploying more than 1,000 officers following a deadly bomb explosion at a mosque in Gamboru Market.
The deployment comes as Christians mark Christmas celebrations amid heightened security concerns after the Wednesday evening attack that claimed five lives and left 35 others injured.
The explosion occurred around 6 p.m. at the Al-Adum Mosque while Muslim worshippers were observing Maghrib prayers.
Speaking on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Nahum Daso, said the incident prompted the command to strengthen existing security arrangements across worship centres, major roads, and recreational areas.
“Although we already had security measures in place, the unfortunate incident of yesterday has made it necessary for us to intensify our deployment,” Daso said.
According to him, the operation is being carried out in collaboration with other security and emergency response agencies to ensure public safety throughout the festive period.
“There will be full domination of security personnel at churches, recreational centres and other strategic locations where people are likely to gather in large numbers,” he stated.
Daso added that the command had placed all personnel on high alert.
“It is a joint operation involving the police and other security agencies. Over 1,000 officers have been deployed within Maiduguri alone, and we remain on standby,” he said.
The police spokesperson urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activity to security agencies.
“People should go about their lawful activities, but they must be cautious and aware of their environment. Any suspicious movement or individual should be reported immediately using the designated emergency numbers,” he advised.
He further disclosed that strict screening measures would be enforced at places of worship.
“Anyone going to churches or mosques will be properly screened before gaining access,” Daso noted.
Meanwhile, Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has condemned the attack, describing it as “barbaric and inhumane.”
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, the governor expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
“I am deeply saddened by the suicide attack at the Gamboru mosque during Maghrib prayers, which resulted in the death of five people and injuries to several others,” Zulum said.
He added, “Attacking a place of worship is a desecration of its sanctity and a cruel act against innocent worshippers.”
The governor extended condolences to the families of the victims and assured residents that the state government, in collaboration with security agencies, had taken adequate measures to prevent further security breaches during and after the festive season.
