Chelsea sign British-born Nigerian defender Yisa Alao from Sheffield Wednesday

Chelsea have completed the signing of highly rated teenage defender Yisa Alao from Sheffield Wednesday.

The Blues beat off competition from Premier League rivals Manchester United and Liverpool to secure the 17-year-old’s signature.

Alao, who featured five times for Sheffield Wednesday’s senior side this season, was officially unveiled by Chelsea on Monday afternoon after putting pen to paper on a two-year contract.

“Chelsea is pleased to announce the signing of Yisa Alao, with the left-back agreeing a contract with the Blues until 2028,” the club said in a statement published on its official website.

Born in Doncaster, the left-back made his first-team debut for Wednesday at just 16 years old, featuring against Bolton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup in August. His rapid development had attracted interest from several top clubs over the years.

Following the move, Alao took to Instagram to bid an emotional farewell to Sheffield Wednesday and their supporters.

“10 years, endless memories, from the staff, to my teammates, to the fans, forever grateful. Thank you, Sheffield Wednesday.”
