Chelsea reportedly eye Barcelona’s Araujo amid defensive injury crisis

Chelsea are reportedly keeping a close watch on Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo and could make a move for him if the Catalan club’s financial struggles persist.

The Blues’ defensive issues have been evident this season after failing to recruit a new centre-back in the summer, despite head coach Enzo Maresca’s insistence on bolstering the position.

Injury setbacks have further compounded Chelsea’s problems, with Levi Colwill ruled out for the season due to an ACL injury.

Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile, and Josh Acheampong have also spent time on the sidelines in recent weeks.

According to Football Insider, Chelsea are actively seeking to reinforce their backline, with a new central defender remaining a key priority for Maresca following a difficult start to the campaign.

The same outlet reported on Saturday (October 11) that the London club are monitoring Araujo, who has been a standout performer for Barcelona.

However, the Spanish champions’ financial constraints could force them to cash in on the 26-year-old Uruguayan, who is also attracting interest from Liverpool.

While a January move appears unlikely, sources suggest Chelsea could intensify their pursuit of Araujo next summer.

The defender, who has made seven appearances for Barcelona this season and worn the captain’s armband six times, is regarded as one of the most important figures in Xavi’s squad.
