Chelsea handed transfer ban over secret payments to players, agents

Chelsea F.C. have been fined £10.75 million after breaching Premier League rules on payments to agents, with the club also receiving a one-year transfer ban that has been suspended for two years, according to talkSPORT.

The £10.75m penalty is the largest fine ever issued by the Premier League, surpassing the previous record of £5.5m handed to West Ham United F.C. in 2007.

The club have also been given a nine-month ban on signing academy players after voluntarily reporting historical breaches of league regulations.

Following two disciplinary investigations, the Premier League confirmed on Monday that the Blues had been sanctioned.

The action came after the club voluntarily disclosed potential violations of the rules.

They were later formally charged by the The Football Association in September.

An independent commission determined that Chelsea had breached regulations linked to financial reporting, third-party investment and youth development.

Alongside the financial penalty, the club have been prohibited from registering academy players for nine months with immediate effect.

The restriction, however, does not affect players currently part of the club’s academy setup.

In addition, Chelsea have been handed a one-year ban on signing first-team players, although the sanction has been suspended for two years.

The rule breaches date back more than a decade and occurred during the club’s previous ownership.

The team was purchased in 2022 by a consortium led by Todd Boehly under the BlueCo group, taking over from former owner Roman Abramovich.

Earlier reports indicated that the club had argued they should not face a points deduction for the breaches.

Chelsea’s current owners instead maintained that a financial penalty would be more appropriate since Abramovich no longer controls the club at Stamford Bridge

The club cooperated fully with investigators after voluntarily revealing the potential violations.

It is believed several of the breaches might not have been discovered by the Premier League if the club had not reported them.

Despite the findings, Chelsea were not found to have violated the league’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules.
