Catholic condemns Niger school abduction, calls for rescue

The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora has condemned the abduction of pupils, students, and teachers of St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State, describing the attack as a disturbing reminder of the growing insecurity facing educational institutions in the country.

Armed men stormed the school between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. on Friday, November 21, 2025, killing a security guard and whisking several students, pupils, and teachers away.

The incident has thrown the Papiri community into panic, coming just days after the abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State.

In a statement signed by the Diocesan Secretary, Rev. Fr. Jatau Luka Joseph, the Church expressed outrage over the attack and deep worry over the fate of the abducted victims.

According to the statement, security operatives were immediately alerted and have since launched coordinated rescue operations to secure the safe return of the victims.

The Diocese said it is working closely with law enforcement agencies, community leaders, and government authorities to assist in the ongoing efforts.
