Carabao Cup: League Two’s Grimsby stun Man Utd 12-11 on penalties

Grimsby Town pulled off a stunning Carabao Cup upset on Wednesday night, edging Manchester United 12-11 on penalties after a dramatic 2-2 draw at Blundell Park.

Bryan Mbeumo was the unfortunate culprit, blasting his decisive spot-kick against the crossbar as the League Two side sent Ruben Amorim’s troubled Red Devils crashing out.

It was United’s first appearance in the second round of the competition since 2014, when Louis van Gaal’s men were humiliated 4-0 by MK Dons. This time, the shock was even greater.

Charles Vernam’s opener and a calamitous mistake from Andre Onana, punished by former United academy player Tyrell Warren, had Grimsby in dreamland.

Mbeumo briefly redeemed himself by halving the deficit after coming off the bench, and Harry Maguire struck late to force penalties.

The shootout itself was a rollercoaster. Onana denied Clarke Oduour, and new signing Matheus Cunha wasted the chance to wrap things up for United.

The contest dragged into sudden death until Mbeumo smashed his kick against the woodwork, sparking wild celebrations as Grimsby fans invaded the pitch to salute their giant-killing heroes.
