The president of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, has revealed that the African Cup of Nations will be expanded from 24 to 28 teams.
The announcement came on Sunday at the conclusion of CAF’s executive committee meeting.
The South African football administrator described the expansion as part of CAF’s efforts to elevate the game across the continent.
“This is about our commitment to world-class football, bringing together the best African players from across the globe to compete on the continent,” Motsepe stated.
However, he did not provide details on how the 28-team format would be organized or when the change would take effect.
The decision has already sparked questions regarding qualification processes and tournament scheduling.
